Welding – A 20th Century Hot Invention

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Welding is the joining of two pieces of metal, in most cases, by heat. Some examples of welded products are ships, aircraft, railroad equipment, automobiles, machinery, pipelines, bridges, home appliances, electric and electronic parts, toys, and artwork.

Welding as we know it today is largely a development of the 20th century. Until then most welding was forge welding. In this process two pieces of iron were heated in a forge to white heat and then hammered together. But only iron and some kinds of steel could be fused together by forge welding. When better and stronger types of steel were developed, a more efficient method than forge welding was needed to join them. By the end of the 19th century new techniques of welding had been worked out.

Today there are about 40 different welding processes. The most important are classified under the general headings of arc welding, gas welding, resistance welding, and brazing.

Engineers have discovered that many metals can be welded together without applying much heat or pressure if the surfaces of the metals are very clean. These processes are called solid state processes because the metals fuse without melting. Another new type of welding is electron beam welding.

Metals like molybdenum and tungsten, which are very heat resistant and must be protected from the atmosphere, are placed in a vacuum chamber and fused by a concentrated beam of electrons. Even the energy of light is used in welding. A beam of concentrated light from a laser contains enough energy to melt steel. Laser beams are already being used to weld small parts, and wider use is being studied.

The Early History of Stamps

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The knowledge of when the first stamp was created will help stamp collectors know when this fine hobby began, and it will allows collectors to realize the great history of this awesome art of stamps. The understanding and knowledge of all the stamps of the past will enable stamp collectors to realize the beauty of this amazing art.

Before the stamp was invented the receiver of a letter paid the postage instead of the sender, which the receiver sometimes refused to pay or accept the letter. However, sometimes the sender would just place a secret message on the letter and when ever the receiver viewed the message he did not need pay for the letter.

The very first postage stamp ever issued was the 1 Penny Black, which was issued by Britain on May 6th of 1840 and pictured the young Queen Victoria. These first stamps were produced and designed by an English schoolmaster by the name of Rowland Hill in 1837. For his act of producing the first stamp was rewarded by him being knighted. These stamps were rated by weight instead of by size, which was three-quarters by seven-eighths, were issued as prepayment for possible postage mail. These first stamps were produced in only black ink.

In fact, the profile of Queen Victoria remained on the British stamps for sixty years until the year 1900. These original stamps had to be cut from the sheet it was produced on by scissors, because they did not have perforations. Unused 1 Penny Black stamps are quite rare, but they are still in existence today. Two days after the release of the Penny Black on May 8th of 1840 the 2 Pence Blue was released, which used blue dies, but was eventually placed into cancellation.

The popularity of this brand new system of sending mail and collecting a fee in advance spread quickly and other countries soon began using similar systems. Brazil was the next country to get into the process of using stamps when it issued the Ox Eye on July 1st in 1843. During that same year Switzerland issued the Canton Zurich on August 1st, which had its digit on the back and the Canton Geneve on September 30th, which was called the Doppelgenf and featured a coat of arms. They followed their stamping designs again in 1845 with their release of the Canton Basel on July 1st entitled, Basler Tauchen.

The first United States stamp were issued on July 1st of 1847 and featured a George Washington ten cent stamp and a Benjamin Franklin five cent stamp. On September 21st of that year the Blue and Orange Mauritus featuring Queen Victoria was released by Mauritius. Bermuda followed up during 1848 with the Bermuda 1 Penny. During the year of 1849 three other stamps were issued. The first was issued on the first of January from France called the Head of Ceres, the second was released on the first of July entitled Leopold I from Belgium, and the last stamp released that year was from Bavaria on the first of November entitled Schwarzer Einser, which was the first German stamp issued.

During 1850, Spain released their Queen Isabella II stamp on the first of January. Also during that same year New South Wales issued a stamp on the tenth of January called Sydney and Imigrants, and Victoria issued a stamp of Queen Victoria sitting on the fifteenth of January. On the fourth of April, Switzerland issued a stamp of coat of arms, Austria issued their coat of arms stamp on the first of June, and Saxony issued the Sachsen-Dreier on the first of July, plus on that same day the British Guayana stamp featuring the name of the postmaster in a circle.

The first pre-stamped envelopes were sold in 1852 and during 1855 a prepayment of postage began being required in the United States. In 1857, the very first perforated stamps appeared in the United States and almost all countries have started using postage stamps by 1860. During the year of 1869 the first picture stamps showing something other than dead people appeared on the first of January. Pre-stamped postcards, which could be purchased for one cent, were issued in 1871.

The Colonial Government of Gibraltar assumed control of Postal Services of Bermuda on the first of January on 1886 when their plates were overprinted using a variety of colors. During December of that same year Gibraltar began replacing the design with his own and then his stamps were used with peseta values from 1889 to 1898.

The very first commemorate stamps from the United States were issued in 1893, which show scenes of the voyage to America by Columbus. Then during 1896 rural free delivery began, which brought mail directly to individuals homes ending out the century.

Baume & Mercier Classima Executives XL Chronograph and Complete Calendar

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Classima Executives XL Chronograph and Complete Calendar is part of the Baume & Mercier’s brand new 2010 release. As the name suggests, the watch is very versatile thanks to the ETA 7751 movement. It provides complete calendar that includes day, date, month and moon phase indicator aside from the chronograph functions and the time. I can not deny that it is a nice looking watch, but it looks quite similar to a watch model by the brand’s big competitor Longines.

The 42mm case, made of stainless steel, is very classic and has fine finishes. But it has little personality itself. The dial features nice guilloche finish in the center. And to save the dial from being too busy, Baume & Mercier replaces numerals with black stick markers. And gray hands are applied to create a Tuxedo look. And the rose gold date hand and the moon phase indicator adds a subtle touch of luxury. The watch comes with sapphire crystal at front and the rear. The case-back reveals a Baume & Mercier signed automatic rotor, an oscillating weight adorned with “Côtes de Genève“, as well as circular-grained bridges and blued steel screws. The crown proudly bears the Phi symbol.

And this watch requires 5 adjustments per year to account for the March, May, July, October and December that have not full 31 days. If you are in the market for a a perpetual calendar of lower price tag, this Baume & Mercier is not a half bad choice. You know high end watches with perpetual calendars normally go for $10,000-$100,000.

Trimble Adventure Planner U.S.A. Topographical/Street/Aerial Map Digital Download (Windows) Very Cool – Bob –
I started using this product with my garmin, and it was decent, the one really cool thing about it was that I could upload photos after my trip and then share the trip online. Sharing trips online is awesome because I can email them to my friends… I almost didn’t buy this product because of the a bad review on this site, but decided to give it a try anyway, and I’m glad I did. After playing with it for a while I bought a nextel phone, and it was even better… I could send trips, routes, points, maps, etc all to my phone overthe air… started leaving my garmin at home and doing it all with my cell phone. Really cool stuff… I would suggest after buying to go and get the latest version from their website… seems to get a little better each version, and you can upgrade for free!
I got rooked! – Don’t Usually Comment – USA
Don’t buy this junky software. THe screen is terrible. Instead of the menu “Help” it has “Hel”. Almost all of the labels are cut off. What does “VIE” mean? Read the description well. I did not. This is a web based service. Which means if you have dial up it will probably take you longer to plan your trip than to take it if you use this. I thought I was buying a program like Streets and Trips or or DeLorme Topo USA not some web based service. I think I’ll uninstall this trash and give it to someone I don’t like.
